“Throughout my 32 years in uniform, I have learned that mentorship is a valuable process that can help individuals develop both professionally and personally. Establishing clear goals/objectives, maintaining open communication, and providing essential feedback are defining characteristics.”
“I was looking for an opportunity to learn from a successful and reputable Veteran-Owned Small Business with a value-added mission and capabilities in support of National Defense and improving operational readiness,” Miceli shared when asked what motivated him to apply for the DoD SkillBridge internship with us.
According to the official SkillBridge website, the program is designed for service members transitioning out of the military to train, apprentice, or intern with industry partners in their desired fields during the last 180 days of their service.
“The DoD SkillBridge program is an opportunity for service members to explore post-military potential career paths, develop new skills, and gain invaluable experience that will support their transition into the civilian workforce,” Miceli said. “Conversely, Industry has the unique opportunity to gain access and insight to highly skilled and motivated service members.”
During his internship, Miceli aims to enhance his skills in strategic operations and earn a professional certification in program management. “I hope to gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of the challenges that face small businesses when partnering with the government and how they seek out and focus on future opportunities,” he stated.
Miceli, who currently holds the rank of Colonel, is transitioning out of the U.S. Army after a 32-year career. Before his transition period, he served as the Deputy Commanding General for Overseas Operations at U.S. Army Contracting Command.
Reflecting on his military background, he emphasized his readiness to contribute: “Based on my various acquisition experiences and army leadership roles, I am looking forward to sharing an array of strategic insights and operational perspectives that have enabled me to identify key challenges, opportunities, and risks.”
Throughout his military career, he successfully worked across organizational lines, collaborated with key stakeholders, and led change management efforts.
“I have learned the importance of leading from a position of trust and transparency. Metrics are not a substitute for leadership, and the best leaders set the tone and reinforce a culture and conditions for success,” he shared.
Mentorship is also a key aspect of his expectations. “Throughout my 32 years in uniform, I have learned that mentorship is a valuable process that can help individuals develop both professionally and personally. Establishing clear goals/objectives, maintaining open communication, and providing essential feedback are defining characteristics.”
In his role with us, he has already engaged in various impactful activities. He says he also enjoys regular touchpoints with our President, discussing industry insights and challenges.
“I have had the opportunity to meet with leaders across the organization, participate in proposal reviews, share experiences, and develop training presentations on the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program,” he noted.
Looking ahead, he aspires to continue making positive impacts on national defense and to give back to the community by mentoring younger adults in leadership and selfless service.
“My post-military aspirations are to seek opportunities where I can give back and teach, coach, and mentor younger adults,” he shared.
For those considering a DoD SkillBridge internship, he offers this advice: “It can be an opportunity to either reinforce and validate those endeavors that you desire to embark upon after transitioning from the military or enable further self-reflection or reevaluation of your post-military goals and objectives.”
We are thrilled to have such a dedicated and experienced individual on our team, and we look forward to seeing all that he will accomplish during his internship and beyond. His journey from military service to civilian success is an inspiration to us all.
